About the song

GEORGE STRAIT BUILT ONE OF COUNTRY MUSIC’S GREATEST CAREERS SINGING OTHER PEOPLE’S SONGS — BUT YEARS LATER, HE ADMITTED THAT SUCCESS HAD MADE HIM “LAZY” ABOUT WRITING HIS OWN.
For decades, George Strait seemed to possess one of the rarest gifts in country music: the ability to hear a song written by someone else and somehow make it sound as though it had always belonged to him.
Nashville’s finest songwriters supplied Strait with extraordinary material, and he turned those songs into country standards.
“The Chair,” “Amarillo by Morning,” “Ocean Front Property,” “Check Yes or No,” “I Cross My Heart,” and countless others helped build a catalog that would eventually make Strait one of the most successful recording artists country music had ever known.
But there was an unexpected consequence to having so many great songs placed in front of him.
George stopped writing.
In later interviews, Strait openly acknowledged that he had become “lazy” when it came to songwriting. It was not that he had lost respect for the craft. Quite the opposite. He was surrounded by elite Nashville writers who consistently delivered songs that perfectly suited his voice, personality, and traditional-country style.
When musicians of that caliber kept bringing him material, there was little pressure for George to sit down and create songs himself.
So year after year, recording session after recording session, Strait focused primarily on interpreting the work of others.
And he became extraordinarily good at it.
Yet somewhere along the journey, the songwriting instinct he had possessed earlier in his career quietly slipped into the background.
The person who eventually helped bring it back was not a Nashville producer, record executive, or legendary songwriter.
It was his son.
George “Bubba” Strait Jr. had grown up surrounded by music, but he initially followed another passion: rodeo.
Bubba became a competitive team roper and built an identity that existed outside his father’s enormous musical shadow. George respected that independence. He never seemed interested in forcing his son toward a recording career simply because the Strait name carried tremendous weight in country music.
Over time, however, Bubba began writing songs.
That development created something unexpected between father and son.
George started writing again too.
Instead of songwriting becoming another obligation of celebrity, it became something personal — two generations of the Strait family sitting together, exchanging ideas, shaping melodies, and telling stories.
The results eventually reached George’s albums.
Bubba earned songwriting credits on several of his father’s recordings, including material from albums such as Twang, Here for a Good Time, Love Is Everything, Cold Beer Conversation, and later projects.
One of the most meaningful moments came with “Living for the Night,” released in 2009.
The song was written by George Strait, Bubba Strait, and Dean Dillon — the legendary songwriter who had already supplied George with some of the defining songs of his career.
For Strait fans, the credit itself told a remarkable story.
The singer who had spent decades transforming Nashville songwriters’ compositions into hits was now writing alongside his own son and one of his most trusted longtime collaborators.
Another important song followed with “Here for a Good Time,” co-written by George, Bubba, and Dillon. Released in 2011, it became another major Strait hit and reinforced the idea that George’s return to songwriting was no temporary experiment.
Bubba had helped awaken something his father had allowed to become dormant.
There is a certain irony in George Strait’s confession that success made him lazy as a songwriter.
That “laziness” existed partly because Strait had become perhaps the greatest song interpreter of his generation. Writers dreamed of George recording their material because they understood what his voice could do for a song.
He did not need to write his own hits to prove himself.
Still, returning to songwriting gave the later chapters of his career a different kind of meaning.
It was no longer simply about finding the best song in Nashville.
Sometimes the best song could begin at home.
And for George, the person who helped reopen that creative door happened to be the boy he had watched grow from a rodeo competitor into a songwriter in his own right.
Bubba did more than contribute songs to his father’s albums.
He reminded George Strait that he still had stories of his own worth writing down.
After decades of singing the words of Nashville’s finest writers, the King of Country discovered that one of his most meaningful songwriting partners had been growing up beside him all along.
