GLEN CAMPBELL’S WIDOW REVEALED THE PAIN BEHIND THEIR 35-YEAR MARRIAGE

BEHIND THE RHINESTONES, THE APPLAUSE, AND ONE OF COUNTRY MUSIC’S MOST BELOVED VOICES WAS A MARRIAGE THAT SURVIVED ADDICTION, FEAR, SOBRIETY — AND FINALLY ALZHEIMER’S.
When Kim Woollen first met Glen Campbell in 1981, she was a 22-year-old Radio City Rockette and he was already a 45-year-old superstar.
It was a blind date, and Kim later remembered being struck by Glen’s charm, humor and warmth. But the evening also offered an unsettling glimpse of the struggle that would follow them into marriage. By the end of the night, Glen was heavily intoxicated. Kim nevertheless saw something in him worth believing in. They married in 1982, beginning a relationship that would last until Glen’s death in 2017.
What followed was not simply a celebrity love story.
Kim later described Glen as generous, affectionate and deeply entertaining when sober. But alcohol and cocaine could transform his behavior. She recalled periods when drinking made him angry, verbally cruel and unpredictable — behavior he sometimes did not remember the following day.
One of the most frightening moments came during what Kim described as a drunken rage, when Glen pointed a gun at her. It became one of the darkest episodes she would later recount publicly while discussing his addiction.
For Kim, loving Glen increasingly meant confronting the difference between the man she knew when he was sober and the man addiction could create.
She stayed because, as she later explained, she believed the good man beneath the drinking was still there. But after becoming a mother, her priorities changed. She realized she could not allow her children to grow up inside the same chaos.
Kim reached out for help.
Friends and family began confronting Glen about his behavior. Eventually he sought treatment and achieved sobriety. Kim later remembered the years that followed as some of the happiest of their marriage — a long period of relative peace in which she and Glen raised their children Cal, Shannon and Ashley and enjoyed family life away from the turmoil of addiction.
For a time, it appeared that they had survived their greatest battle.
Then another one arrived.
Around 2009, Glen began experiencing noticeable cognitive problems. He forgot lyrics, became confused and struggled with tasks that once seemed effortless. Kim initially wondered whether age or ordinary forgetfulness was responsible.
But the signs became impossible to ignore.
Glen was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment in 2009 and with Alzheimer’s disease in late 2010. The family publicly revealed the diagnosis in 2011.
For Kim, this loss was different from addiction.
During the drinking years, she could still hope Glen might become sober. Alzheimer’s offered no comparable recovery.
She watched the man who had once memorized thousands of lyrics struggle with familiar objects and surroundings. He repeated jokes, became increasingly dependent on her and sometimes grew agitated or combative when he could no longer understand what was happening around him.
Eventually, even recognition began disappearing.
Kim described the cruelty of Alzheimer’s as losing someone while that person was still physically standing in front of you. The disease did not simply attack Glen’s memory; it gradually changed the marriage itself.
Yet music remained astonishingly resilient.
After announcing his diagnosis, Glen embarked on his Goodbye Tour in 2011 and 2012. His children joined him onstage, helping their father through performances as audiences watched one of America’s great entertainers confront dementia publicly.
When Glen forgot words, crowds sometimes sang them for him. The moments became less like ordinary concerts and more like collective acts of affection.
Kim’s role changed too.
She was no longer simply Glen Campbell’s wife. She became his caregiver, protector and advocate.
The physical and emotional demands were immense. She later admitted that exhaustion and depression nearly overwhelmed the family before she understood that caregivers themselves needed support. Her experiences eventually led her to speak publicly about dementia caregiving and the importance of asking for help.
Glen Campbell died on August 8, 2017, at age 81 after years with Alzheimer’s disease.
Their marriage had lasted roughly 35 years.
Those decades contained glamorous nights, children, music, addiction, frightening confrontations, recovery, laughter, dementia and finally goodbye.
Kim’s story does not present Glen as either a flawless legend or simply a troubled addict.
Instead, it reveals something painfully human: a gifted man capable of bringing joy to millions while privately fighting forces that sometimes hurt the people closest to him.
And beside him was a woman whose marriage demanded far more than standing backstage while the world applauded.
She loved Glen through the years when addiction threatened to destroy their family.
She loved him through sobriety.
And when Alzheimer’s slowly took away the man she had known, she remained beside him through one final battle neither of them could win.
