About the song

WHO IS GEORGE STRAIT’S WIFE? ALL ABOUT NORMA STRAIT

For more than four decades, George Strait has stood beneath the brightest lights in country music. He has filled stadiums, collected awards, recorded generations of unforgettable songs, and earned a title few artists could ever carry: the King of Country.
But long before the fame, the records, or the cowboy hat became part of American music history, there was Norma.
Norma Strait is not simply George Strait’s wife. She is his high school sweetheart, the woman who knew him before Nashville knew his name, the mother of his children, and the person who has remained beside him through extraordinary success and heartbreaking loss.
George and Norma grew up in Texas and became sweethearts when they were young. After George graduated from high school, the couple eloped. The Country Music Hall of Fame describes Norma as his longtime sweetheart and notes that Strait married her before beginning his service in the U.S. Army.
They married on December 4, 1971. Years later, George Strait’s official fan publication celebrated their December 4 anniversary, marking 35 years of marriage in 2006 and 41 years in 2012.
That means their relationship began before nearly everything the public associates with George Strait.
Before “Amarillo by Morning.”
Before “The Chair.”
Before “I Cross My Heart.”
Before sold-out stadiums and dozens of No. 1 records.
Norma was already there.
Soon after their marriage, George entered the Army. While stationed in Hawaii, he began singing country music with an Army-sponsored band, an experience that helped shape the direction of his future career. Eventually, after returning to Texas, George joined the Ace in the Hole Band and began the long journey toward Nashville success.
Through those uncertain early years, Norma shared a life that looked nothing like the glamorous world George would later enter.
As his career exploded during the 1980s, their family remained at the center of his life.
George and Norma had two children: daughter Jenifer and son George Jr., better known as Bubba. George Strait’s official website continues to list Norma as his wife and Bubba as their son.
But in 1986, the Strait family experienced a tragedy no parent should ever have to endure.
Jenifer, only 13 years old, was killed in an automobile accident. The Country Music Hall of Fame records the devastating loss and notes that when George later accepted the CMA Male Vocalist of the Year honor, he dedicated it to Jenifer’s memory.
For George and Norma, there was no award large enough and no stadium loud enough to erase that grief.
The family later established the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation, which supports organizations serving children’s emotional, educational and medical needs. George Strait’s official website continues to promote charitable efforts benefiting the foundation.
Through everything, Norma largely remained outside the celebrity spotlight.
That privacy has become part of what makes the Strait marriage so fascinating to fans. George became one of the most recognizable singers in America, yet the couple never seemed interested in turning their relationship into a public spectacle.
Norma appeared at important moments, but their marriage was never treated like a publicity campaign.
Even at George’s Country Music Hall of Fame celebrations, those close to him recognized his devotion not only to country music but also to Norma and their family. An official Strait publication recounting his Hall of Fame medallion ceremony noted George Jones speaking about Strait’s dedication to Norma and their son Bubba.
Their family eventually grew again.
Bubba married Tamara, and George and Norma became grandparents to Harvey and Jilliann. When Jilliann was born in 2016, George Strait’s official website proudly announced her arrival as the newest granddaughter of George and Norma Strait.
Today, after more than five decades of marriage, Norma remains an essential part of George Strait’s story.
Fans may hear George sing love songs such as “I Cross My Heart” and think about romance in its most beautiful form. But behind the songs is something even more powerful: a real relationship that existed before the world was listening.
Norma knew George when he was simply a young Texas man with no guarantee that music would ever become his future.
She stayed through military service, struggling musician years, astonishing fame, parenthood, unbearable grief, grandchildren, and decades of change.
George Strait became the King of Country Music.
But through nearly his entire adult life, one woman has known him simply as George.
And perhaps that is the most beautiful part of their story.
